A destitute family receives a house during Mandela Day

A family of five members is to be built a new house during the Mandela Day Celebrations on 18 July 2012 at Elukwatini near Badplaas in the Albert Luthuli Municipality. The Department of Human Settlements will join two contractors who have donated a house to be built for a destitute family of five members at Nhlazatje 05 at Elukwatini, Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality as part of annual Mandela Day Celebrations. The department will partner with the municipality, local traditional council, contractors and other local structures to take part in this important campaign.

The family was identified by school children who were doing a project to make a difference in their community. The children then identified the plight of Bhekumuzi Yende who is in Grade 9 at Dlomodlomo High School and decided to intervene. They donated to buy him school uniform and the remaining money was used to also buy school uniforms for his siblings who are at Mkhomazane Primary School.

Yende’s school teacher decided to visit the family and establish his and family’s welfare following the discovery by the children. The teacher then engaged the school children and motivated them to do something to improve the situation of the family. It is when they approached contractors for the donation of a house, which was successful. Chief Dlamini donated land (stand) for the family. The department, municipality, school, contractors and locals will join hands and participate in the actual construction of the house during the day. The contractors are donating the house as part of their social responsibility.

The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good. Ultimately it seeks to empower communities everywhere. “Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day.” Individuals and organisations are free to participate in Mandela Day as they wish. We do however urge everyone to adhere to the ethical framework of “service to one’s fellow human”. The department will also symbolically build two houses for needy old citizens at Dondonald Village in the same municipality.
