Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will, on 25 and 26 February 2011, visit the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality in the North West province to assess progress of the government’s War on Poverty programme.
The War on Poverty campaign is a programme of government which seeks to intervene in the country’s poorest communities to improve the quality of life. The North West province launched its provincial campaign in Greater Taung Local Municipality in 2008.
Utilising statistical data from Statistics South Africa, the campaign targets poor wards, to bring urgency and better coordination among all levels of governance in the fight against poverty. The Deputy President will be accompanied by national ministers, the Premier of the province Thandi Modise and members of the Executive Council.
The visit will afford the Deputy President a chance to meeting with the North West province leadership, a visit to poor households culminating with a community meeting in Manthe village in the Greater Taung local municipal area.
Members of the media are invited to cover the visit.
