Deputy President Motlanthe to address the 16 Days of Activism on “NO Violence against Women and Children” closing ceremony in Mpumalanga Province

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will on Saturday, 10 December 2011, address the closing ceremony of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign on No Violence against Women and Children, Chrissiesmeer near Ermelo, Mpumalanga province.

The 16 Days of Activism Campaign takes place annually from the 25th of November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to the 10th of December (International Human Rights Day).

Held under the theme, “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World”, the campaign this year focuses on increasing awareness of the detrimental effect of domestic violence on women, children.

The period of the campaign coincides with commemoration of the World AIDS Day on December 01 and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 03. This allows for an increased focus on the link between sexual violence and the spread of HIV infection as well as incidents of abuse experienced by persons with disabilities.

Deputy President Motlanthe will be accompanied by Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms Lulu Xingwana, Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza, Human Settlement Deputy Minister Zou Kota-Fredericks and senior government officials.

Preceding the event will be the handover of houses to identified families with women, people with disabilities and vulnerable children.
