The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Ms Thandi Tobias-Pokolo will award ten undergraduate bursaries to the value of R1.6 million to underprivileged students who have excelled in their matric studies but were unable to further their studies due to financial challenges. The event will be held at the DTI campus, Building D on 4 May 2012 at 10h00.
The bursary awards initiative is the brainchild of the Deputy Minister Tobias-Pokolo's bursary programme, whereby ten underprivileged students who have completed their matric are granted bursaries to further their tertiary studies.
"The students we are targeting have to be living in rural areas in all the nine provinces and they of course have to have demonstrated outstanding matric results in their year of study to qualify for the bursary," said Deputy Minister Tobias-Pokolo.
She added that as a Ministerial Programme, the bursary programme will be managed and administered under the bursary policy of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for the duration of the studies of the ten recommended students.For the 2012/13 financial year, the expenditure for the bursars is estimated at R400 000.00.
"On approval of the bursary, the successful recipients will sign a contract to serve back at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for a period equivalent to the years it took to complete their qualification. This fulfils me as a role player as this will not only empower our youth but will also contribute in achieving the strategic objective of creating employment for our young people," she concluded.
