CSIR celebrates excellence

The Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, will deliver the keynote address at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Awards (CSIR) Excellence Awards on Friday, 17 October.

The event will be celebrated under the theme, "Celebrating the people behind our excellence".

The Excellence Awards is a biennial event at which the CSIR gives recognition to its top achievers, highlighting the important contribution of science, engineering and technology in improving the lives of the citizens of South Africa.

According to the National Development Plan, science, technology and innovation are what make the difference between countries that break the cycle of poverty by growing and developing their economies, and those that do not.  For South Africa to join the successful countries it has to apply insights gained from research and use them creatively.

A programme such as the CSIR Excellence Awards gives researchers an incentive to continue pushing the envelope and taking the country along the path towards a knowledge economy.

As a public entity that reports to the Minister of Science and Technology, the CSIR is integral to the DST achieving the objectives of its Ten-Year Innovation Plan.

The event will also be attended by Acting Director-General of Science and Technology, Thomas Auf der Heyde, the CEO of the CSIR, Dr Sibusiso Sibisi, the CSIR Group Executive: Strategic Alliances and Communication, Dr Rachel Chikwamba, and members of the CSIR Executive and Board.
