The Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi will address the 7th annual Air Quality Governance Lekgotla, taking place on 29 – 30 October 2012 in Rustenburg.
The Lekgotla is an annual event that is aimed at providing a forum for coordination and capacity building in air quality management. The event also provides air quality officials from all spheres of government the opportunity to share experiences, challenges and to plan for the year ahead. Through this interaction and information-sharing, the Lekgotla also strengthens cooperation and collaboration between the three spheres of government (national, provincial and municipal) and help them to work together in order to improve the quality of air in the country.
The theme of the 2012 edition of the Air Quality Governance Lekgotla is “Sharpening the air quality technical and legislative aspects for improved service delivery”. The event will deal with, among others: ambient air quality monitoring in the National Priority Areas, the compliance and enforcement roles of air quality officials; air quality management planning and climate change co-benefits, as well as the implementation progress of the National Climate Change Policy. The topics for the 2012 workshops will be the National Vehicle Emission Strategy, the National Atmospheric Emission Inventory development and the Air Quality Index.
The event gives a platform for the different spheres of government responsible for air quality management to showcase their work, build meaningful networks and to share experiences. It will also allow the Department of Environmental Affairs to profile its work in managing and improving air quality in the country and to highlight (to both governmental and external stakeholders) the progress made by the Department to date in relation to the rollout of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act (Act No. 39 of 2004).
Media is invited to attend the opening session of this event.
