The Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi will launch the Atlas of Freshwater Ecosystem Priority Areas in South Africa. This atlas provides the first comprehensive assessment of the country’s freshwater ecosystem priority areas.
The atlas summarises the knowledge of the freshwater ecological community in South Africa, representing over 1 000 person years of experience. This knowledge has, for the first time, been consolidated into a single document and is now accessible to policymakers, managers and the public.
It answers the question: How many, and which rivers and wetlands, do we have to maintain in a natural condition to sustain economic and social development, yet still conserve our freshwater biodiversity?
Media are invited to the launch
