Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Ntuli and Energy Minister Peters launches Component 2 of the Durban Landfill Gas to Electricity Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project

The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Ms Maria Ntuli, will co-officiate with Minister of Energy, Ms Dipuo Peters during the official launch of Component 2 of the eThekwini Bisasar Road Landfill Gas at the corner of Electro and Dhulam Road, on 28 January 2010 in Durban, KwaZulu Natal.

The project is the first clean development mechanism project in Africa that comprises of extracting landfill gas through gas wells to generate electricity. Electricity at the Bisasar Road Landfill Compound is generated through purpose built 1MW engines currently generating a total of 6,5MW with a further 1MW engine at the Mariannhill Landfill Site totalling 7,5MW. The project will bring about the reduction in the release of harmful Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and strengthen the Durban grid.

The landfill gas project received R17.3 million through Department of Trade and Industry Critical Infrastructure Programme (CIP) for infrastructure support to an investment project with a value of R147 million. Total project income revenue is estimated around R4.5 million per month realised from the sale of carbon credits and the sale of electricity.
