Deputy Minister Tokozile Xasa of Tourism launches an initiative to position tourism in South Africa as a service driven industry

Deputy Minister Tokozile Xasa will launch the National Tourism Service Excellence Norms and Standards on Wednesday, 28 March 2012 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

The standards are aimed at improving and maintaining service levels in the tourism value chain. This was borne out of a realisation that there is lack of integrated service standards in the delivery of effective customer service and that it has contributed negatively to the tourism sector's current service levels.

The application of the newly developed standards will help position South Africa as a globally competitive service destination of choice and value for money.

In South Africa, service delivery in the tourism sector is regulated in terms of the Consumer Protection Act, 2008 (Act No 68 of 2008), which places emphasis on the establishment of national norms and standards that relate to the protection of consumers by providing for improved standards of consumer information in order to prohibit unfair marketing and business practices.
