Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi to visit Assmang (Ferromanganese Smelter) at Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal to assess progress in relation to compliance notice

Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, will visit the Assmang Cato Ridge plant on Thursday, 21 July 2011, in KwaZulu-Natal province. The purpose of the visit is to check the improvements made following the 2007 environmental inspections.

Assmang was inspected by the Green Scorpions in February 2007 and it was found that a number of environmental legislation had been contravened. A Compliance Notice and Directive were therefore issued to Assmang, stipulating conditions which the company had to comply with in making necessary improvements to its facility to become compliant. Consequently, Assmang has indicated it has now complied with most of the conditions required by the Department following the 2007 inspections.

The objective of the Deputy Minister's visit is to confirm whether or not these improvements that have been recorded, satisfy the compliance requirements stipulated in the Compliance Notice and Directives issued to Assmang.
