Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi to launch Shixini Adopt a River project

Rejoice Mabudafhasi, Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs will on Thursday, 2 June 2011 launch the Shixini Adopt a River project.

The launch of this project comes after Chief Dumalisile of the Amajingqi tribe in the Mbashe Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape requested support from Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi to initiate the Adopt a River project in Shixini.

The Adopt a River project is aimed at addressing pollution in rivers and also to bring communities on board. The project also intends to educate communities so that they have knowledge about water resource management and our environment in order for them to take full responsibility and to be able to make informed decisions.

A plan was developed to assist the community with the improvement of the condition of the Shixini River. It will also assist with the socio economic development of the area through construction of aweir for irrigation purposes, installation of 24 rain water harvesting tanks, capacity building ofyouth in the village on water conservation water demand management and water purificationand water treatment.

There will be various awareness programmes to empower community members and school children on protection of water resources and water saving tips.
