Mme Rejoice Mabudafhasi, MP, Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, will launch the Setsoto Women Empowerment Adopt a River project on 03 August 2012, in Mapenyadira community hall, Ficksburg, Free State.
The Setsoto Women Empowerment is a non-profit organisation based in Meqheleng in Ficksburg. The organisation was founded in August 2010 by a group of women. In November 2011 the Setsoto Women Empowerment organisation took a decision to embark on Adopt-a-River project. The aim is to take care of Caledon River which is one of the important water sources in Ficksburg.
Through this organisation 30 women and six men are working on the project to take care of the river. Adopt a River project is a permanent initiative aimed at enhancing community awareness around cleaning and rehabilitation of the rivers with the aim of protecting and conserving the water source. The organisation conducts education and awareness in schools, community and use local media to reach more people.
The Department of Water Affairs provided the Setsoto Women Empowerment organisation with training on First Aid, Snake handling and Environmental awareness. The Department also provided them with protective clothing, first aid kits and tongs for snake handling.
The Executive Mayor of Setsoto Local Municipality, Cllr Tshediso Jakobo will join the Deputy Minister during the launch.
