The R11,5 Working for the Coast: Mthamvuna to Umkomaas project covers the coastal stretch that falls within Ugu District Municipality and its three local municipalities (Hibiscus Coast, Umndoni, and Umzumbe Municipality).

The project is about the cleaning and rehabilitation of coastline, invasive alien plant removal, maintenance of pedestrian walkways and board walks as well as installation of refuse bins. The project will create 112 job opportunities for the locals.

On this month of September, annually communities around the world take part in the world’s biggest coastal clean-up, known as International Coastal Clean-up Day (ICCD) which is aimed at creating awareness about the importance of conserving oceans for sustainable development that contribute to economic growth, development and for recreational purposes.

The theme for the 2011 International Coastal Clean-up Day is: “Trash Free Seas”. The 2011 ICCD will be one of our build up activities towards 17th Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP 17) to be held in Durban.
