Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi to launch the Jukskei Adopt-A-River cleaning project in Alexandra

The Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, will launch the Jukskei Adopt-a-River cleaning project, in Alexandra Township, north of Johannesburg, on 31 August 2011.

The Department of Water Affairs seeks to create awareness on the importance of South Africa’s scarce water resources and to promote community participation in taking care and cleaning of the country’s rivers, through its Adopt-a-River project.

The Adopt-a-River project aims to address pollution in rivers, create job opportunities and skills development for women and youth. The Department has prioritised Jukskei River as one of river systems that require urgent intervention in order to improve the water quality and restore its ecological status.

A total of 100 volunteers, both women and youth will clean the Jukskei River for the duration of 12 months and in the process be afforded a stipend.
