Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi to announce winners of the 2012 Youth Water Awards at the youth summit

Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, the Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs will announce the winners of the 2012 Youth Water Awards at the award ceremony of the Youth Water Summit, on 6 July 2012, in Birchwood hotel, Boksburg.

The award ceremony is a culmination of a week-long intensive educational programme for the in-school youth and out of school youth where they engaged in various exciting activities such as excursions, public speaking, debates, national competitions, consolidating report of existing youth initiatives/programmes from respective participating countries and drafting an African Youth Strategy on Water and Implementation plan.

The deputy minister will present the innovative youth awards in the following categories:

  • Baswa le Meetse (Youth in Water) - This competition based project targets Grade 6 learners and conveys health and hygiene messages through medium of art, i.e. drama, traditional music, poetry, praise singing and posters.
  • South African Youth Water Prize (SAYWP) - Learners between Grade 9 and 11 are engaged in identifying problems and develop inventions and awareness projects to solve them. The project serves as an incubator for the Water Affairs Learning Academy.
  • Aqua-Enduro - The core business of the programme is issues of drinking water quality. The aim is to develop an interest in learners who are between Grade 8 and 11 to pursue careers in the water sector.
  • Public Speaking – Target learners between Grades 10 and 11 learners and focuses on raising awareness about the impact of Climate Change on water resources.

Minister of Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr Collins Chabane, Minister of Energy, Minerals and Water Affairs from Botswana, Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe, Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Ms Zou Kota–Fredericks, South African Musical heroines Ma Abigail Kubheka and Ma Dorothy Masuka are expected to attend the award ceremony.
