Deputy Minister Andries Nel will lead the South African delegation travelling to Geneva today, 29 May 2012, to attend the 13th Session of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review.
The UPR mechanism is a unique process which involves a review of human rights records of all 192 United Nations Member States on every four years. This meeting provides an opportunity for all states to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situation in their respective countries and to overcome challenges to the enjoyment of human rights.
South Africa is expected to present its report before the UPR Working Group on 31 May 2012 and also attend a meeting on 04 June 2012 in which the UPR Working Group is expected to adopt its report on South Africa.
