Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Hon. Andries Nel, MP, in New York to attend the Assembly of State Parties to The Rome Statute on the International Criminal Court

Hon. Andries Nel, MP accompanied by Senior Officials from the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and Department of International Relations and Co-operation is in New York to attend the Tenth Session of the Assembly of the State Parties to the Rome Statute on the International Criminal Court from 12-21 December 2011.

The Assembly of State Parties is convening to; amongst other things; elect the ICC Prosecutor and six Judges to serve on the ICC bench. The Assembly will also consider the budget and audit report of the ICC.

The Tenth Session of the Assembly of State Parties will be preceded by a high-level retreat on "Supporting Complementarity at the National Level: An Integrated Approach to the Rule of Law" (Greentree II) organised by the International Centre for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) and the United Nations Development Programme with the support of the Governments of Denmark and South Africa along with the Assembly of State Parties.

Greentree II which will be held from 8-9 December 2011, at the Greentree Estate in Long Island, NY, seeks to deepen the discussion on technical and operational aspects of strengthening complementarity at the national level.

The specific objectives of the event are to ensure increased co-ownership of the process by development/rule of law actors; to provide analysis on progress made on complementarity in specific country contexts and to explore experiences with national capacity development. Deputy Minister Andries Nel is scheduled to deliver opening remarks at the opening gala dinner on 7 December 2011.

Deputy Minister Andries Nel will also co-host a side event on complementarity in the form of a panel discussion to discuss options for the way forward in bolstering the principle of complementarity. This event will take place on 16 December 2011, at 13h15 at the North Lawn Building, United Nations Building, NY.
