Deputy Minister Enver Surty to launch School Library Guidelines

The Deputy Minister of Basic Education Mr Enver Surty will on Monday, 13 August 2012 deliver a keynote address at the launch of the National Guidelines for School Library and Information Services (NGSLIS) in Attridgeville, Pretoria.

The National Guidelines for School Library and Information Services target provinces, districts and schools and remains a valuable resource in the quest to deliver quality reading material to learners. It further deals with the provision of human and physical resources and training of library personnel. These guidelines provide information and ideas that are fundamental to the provision of school library and information services for learners and teachers in the school.

 Background to the National Guidelines for School Library and Information Services

  • The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has developed the National School Library and Information Services Guidelines (NGSLIS) that explores a range of library models which include classroom libraries, mobile libraries, cluster libraries and school community libraries.
  • The National Guidelines for School Library and Information Services targets provinces, districts and schools and are therefore a valuable resource at all levels. It further deals with the provision of human and physical resources and training of library personnel.
  • These guidelines provide information and ideas that are fundamental to the provision of school library and information services for schools.
  • The NGSLIS will be launched at a centralised school library as one of the advocacy activities to showcase various library models for Library and Information services provisioning.
  • The Deputy Minister will launch and deliver a keynote address at the event to be held at Bathokwa Primary school, 1 Lephora Street in Attridgeville.
  • Amongst the invited dignitaries are officials from Department of the Basic Education, Arts and Culture, National Libraries of South Africa, South African Book Development Council, SGB members, teachers, principals, librarians, key stakeholders' in the book promotion fraternity, HEI institutions and learners from the school.
