Deputy Minister Ebrahim to co-chair the South Africa-Malawi Joint Commission for Cooperation meeting

The Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Ebrahim Ebrahim, and Minister Ephraim Mganda Chiume, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Malawi, will co-chair the 2nd Session of the South Africa-Malawi Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) in Pretoria on 7 September 2012.

The JCC meeting follows the high-level visits to South Africa by President Joyce Banda of Malawi, which took place in April 2012 and July 2012 respectively.

During the JCC meeting, bilateral discussions between the two delegations will focus, among others, on economic cooperation, political and security matters of mutual interest and issues related to Malawi’s economic recovery.

There is close bilateral cooperation between the two countries following the signing of the JCC Agreement in May 2007. The main objective of the JCC Agreement is to promote political, economic and social cooperation between the two countries.

There is a noticeable economic cooperation between the two countries as evidenced by a large number of South African companies operating in Malawi.

In terms of trade relations, 2011 trade statistics show that Malawi was South Africa’s 9th largest export destination in Africa (7th in the SADC region) and ranked 10th with regard to South Africa’s imports from the Continent.
