On 1 October 2011, Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Thabang Makwetla will deliver an address during the 'handing over of the exhumed remains' ceremony at Freedom Park, Salvokop, Pretoria from 10h00 to 12h30.
The exhumation and handing over of lost persons follows the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) process currently implemented by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) missing person task team and TRC unit in the Department of Justice.
Recently the National Assembly adopted the 2011 Military Veterans Bill, spearheaded by newly established department of military veterans (that accounts to the ministry of defence and military veterans), whose objectives include recognition and honouring of military veterans and their dependants.
The bill seeks to improve the socio-economic conditions of all former soldiers through the provision of the following support and benefits, namely housing, education, job placement, free healthcare, free access to public transport, compensation, counselling, business support and memorialisation in life and in death. The profile of the deceased former MK members whose bodies will be handed over to families and tomorrow’s programme is attached for your information.
