Deputy Home Affairs Minister Fatima Chohan to interact with Roodepoort high school learners to encourage them to apply for IDs

Home Affairs Deputy Minister Fatima Chohan will on Wednesday 28 March 2012 interact with learners at four Roodepoort high schools, with a view to encouraging all 16-year olds to apply for Identity Documents (IDs) as part of the National Population Registration (NPR) Campaign.

The NPR is the department’s on-going campaign which is aimed at ensuring that each and every citizen, young and old, has been registered and has the right document at a specified time of their lives. The primary goal of the NPR campaign is to ensure application of IDs by 16-year olds, that the registration of all child birth is done within 30-days of delivery and end all late registration of births.

In Roodepoort, Deputy Minister Chohan will place a special focus on grade 12 learners since an ID is an essential requirement during matric examinations. The Roodepoort schools that are to be visited are Allen Glen High School, Hoerskool Die Adelaar, Princess and Westridge High Schools.

An ID is also a passport to a better life as it enables holders to access all social services provided by government as well as opportunities for, amongst others, further education and training.

In this regard, the Department of Home Affairs will deploy its mobile offices as well as dedicated officials to the four named schools to ensure that learners are assisted with ID applications.
