The Department for Women, Children and People with Disabilities is convening a two-day Rural Women’s Summit in Tzaneen, Limpopo from Friday 13 to 14 May. The summit brings together representatives of rural women’s organisations with experiences on implementation of rural development programmes from all the nine provinces.
Theme for the summit: "Breaking the silence: Expanding opportunities for rural women".
On day one (13 May), the Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms Lulu Xingwana will visit various rural development projects run by women and people with disabilities around Tzaneen in Mopani District. The aim is to gain first-hand information about experiences of women involved in rural development projects.
The official opening of the summit takes place at 18h00 on 13 May at Karibu Lodge near Tzaneen. The opening session will be addressed by Minister Xingwana and Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale.
Day two will be a full day of discussion and engagement at Karibu Lodge on issues affecting women in rural areas. Some of the critical issues that will be discussed at this summit include:
- Government driven programmes to address poverty amongst rural women
- Funding for rural women projects
- Access to land, water, market and other business development necessities
- Access to social services such as health care, education and literacy programmes.
