The Department of Trade and Industry to launch Aerospace Innovation and Training Centre

Members of the media are invited to attend the launch of the Centurion Aerospace Village’s Innovation and Training Centre (ITC2) by the MEC for Gauteng Economic Development, Ms Qedani Mahlangu.

Date: Tuesday, 29 November 2011
Time: 14h00 to 16h00
Venue: Centurion Aerospace Village, Cnr Van der Spuy and Van Ryneveld streets, Pierre van Ryneveld, Centurion

The Centurion Aerospace Village (CAV) is an initiative of the Department of Trade and Industry to develop a high-tech and advanced manufacturing aero-mechanical and defence cluster adjacent to the Waterkloof Airforce base in Centurion.

The primary purpose of CAV is to develop a sub-tier supply chain which is aimed at integrating the local aerospace and defence companies into the global supply chains and becoming suppliers of choice to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) such as Boeing, Airbus, Spirit Aviation and Labinal.

The ITC2 facility entails process flows that will enhance a larger production volume of detailed parts and is currently being designed on LEAN principles with special attention to tool and part handling and general flow to ensure that machined parts are integrated into structural assemblies as opposed to parts for mechanical systems.

The facility will also be home to new process technologies within the Aerospace sector ranging from Composite Continuous Fibre Reinforcement Thermo Plastics (CFRTP), Complex Forming & Robotic Welding, Laser Additive Manufacture for Titanium Parts, etc. Some of these technologies have already being commercialised and are being supplied directly to Airbus on the A320, A350WB and Boeing 737.

MEC Mahlangu will deliver the keynote address at the event which will also be attended by, Captains of industry and representatives of the International aerospace companies.
