Department of Trade and Industry to host alcohol abuse awareness campaign in Mpumalanga

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) will host the awareness campaign on alcohol abuse at Digwale, a village situated in the Dr J.S. Moroka Municipality in Mpumalanga, on Friday 6 July 2012 from 10h00.

This campaign is part of the series that aims to educating the youth about the harmful effects of alcohol abuse. The dti will also share with the youth and community members services of the dti that young people and communities can access to participate in the economy.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), our country is ranked 52nd on a list of 191 countries for alcohol consumption. Statistics also reveal that 30% of our male and female drinkers are engaged in binge drinking. With these figures, it is clear that efforts to discourage drinking in our communities need to be enhanced significantly.

The campaign, which will be driven under the United Nations theme of “Global action for healthy communities without drugs and alcohol”, will be rolled out through interactive workshops, where youth will be engaged on the negative effects of alcohol abuse and the liquor laws the consumers and liquor traders have to abide by.
