Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) to host the third Space Industry Seminar in Cape Town

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) together with the French South Africa Institute of Technology (F’SATI) will be hosting a Space Industry Seminar at the Enrinvale Estate Hotel, Somerset West, Cape Town from 25 to 28 October 2010. Members of the media are invited to attend. The F’SATI Programme is an initiative led by the Department of Science and Technology, which is implemented by the National Research Foundation and the dti contributes to the Industry aspects of the programme.

The purpose of the seminar is to promote the development the South African Industry by providing access to the information from the International Space Experts. The dti is currently developing a Space Industry Development Framework while aiming to maximise the participation of the domestic industry in the emerging National Space Programme.

Ms Nomfuneko Majaja, the Chief Director, Advanced Manufacturing unit at the dti will present a brief overview of the current status of this framework. The framework was developed a steering committee comprising of the dti, Council for Science Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Communication (DOC).

The seminar will provide an opportunity for the industry stakeholders to provide inputs into the framework. The seminar will also provide an overview of current space activities in South Africa. The international space experts will present a series of lectures on various specialised aspects of satellite engineering and operations. The seminar will include an industry exhibition and a workshop on entrepreneurship in small satellite industry to promote increased participation by the South African companies in this sector.
