Department strengthens accountability in municipalities

In its effort to strengthen the oversight arrangements of Municipal Public Accounts Committees (MPAC’s) in municipalities, the North West Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs will tomorrow 2 November 2012 establish the provincial Chairperson’s Municipal Accounts Forum at Mmabatho Civic Centre starting from 9h00.

All the chairpersons of the MPAC’s from all local and district municipalities across the province will attend. The session will be chaired by MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs China Dodovu and Chairperson of the Legislature’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts Hlomane Chauke.

The MPAC’s which were established last year after the Local Government elections will run for a period of five year together with the term of council. The primary function of MPAC’s is to promote good governance, transparency and accountability on the use of municipal resources. They exercise oversight over the executive obligations of councils, assist councils to hold the executive and municipal entities to account, and to ensure the efficient and effective use of municipal resource.

The MPAC’s were established in terms of the Local Government Municipal Structures Act, Act 117 of 1998 and the Municipal Finance Management Act, Act 56 of 2003.
