Department of Social Development to commemorate World Population Day

The year 2009 marks the 15th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held at Cairo in 1994. Every year since ICPD, 11 July is observed globally as the World Population Day.

The Department of Social Development in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the population association of South Africa and the new Department for Women, Youth, Children and people with Disability will commemorate the World Population Day at the University of the Western Cape.

The 2009 commemoration is held under the theme, "responding to the economic crisis, investing in women is a smart choice." The Minister of Social Development, Ms Edna Molewa will outline government's programmes relating to the theme in her keynote address.
