The Department of Science and Technology partners with the
South African State Theatre to build excitement around Africa’s Square Kilometre Array bid

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, and The South African State Theatre invite you to the launch of a national drive to create awareness about Africa’s bid to host the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope.

In the run-up to the announcement of the SKA bid winner in 2012, the Full Moon Fever campaign is set to stimulate interest in the initiative and illustrate how Africa is fast emerging as a global hub of astronomy.

Minister Pandor will launch the Full Moon Fever campaign, which combines exhibitions, a laser show, a performing arts presentation of African Stars and a night sky view – courtesy of the State Theatre.

Similar to the successful "Football Friday" campaign to create interest in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Full Moon Fever campaign is set to showcase astronomy on the Friday and Saturday closest to the full moon of each month.

The next leg of Full Moon Fever will take place in the Northern Cape, coinciding with a lunar eclipse.

A MeerKAT mascot will hand out promotional material on astronomy facilities at the event.

Date: Monday, 14 November 2011
Time: 15h00 – 17h00
