Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will deliver a keynote address at the Internship Research Day celebration which marks the completion of the internship year. About 272 interns will be graduating from the programme.
The event will take place on Friday, 25 February, from 09:30, at the University of Pretoria’s Sanlam Auditorium.
The implementation of the Department of Science and Technology’s internship programme is managed by the National Research Foundation. In the past five years almost 750 interns have been through the programme, hosted by various DST institutions, including science councils, national facilities and museums. R29 million has been invested in the programme to date, with a further R45 million earmarked for the next three years.
This initiative has proven valuable in increasing the pool of human resources for the science system. In addition, 60% of interns have been absorbed as permanent employees by their host institutions.
