Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport to launch Transport Month on a school bus

The North West Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT), headed by MEC Mahlakeng Mahlakeng, will be launching its Transport Month activities on 7 October 2010 in Mafikeng in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District. The MEC, a major proponent of scholar transport will be travelling by school bus. Most recently the DPWRT awarded 125 new scholar transport routes to 95 service providers across the country. These new contracts become effective on 1 October 2010 and the department and the MEC wish to see the effectiveness of this system firsthand.

From 13 to 15 October the DPWRT will be exhibiting at the New Partnership for Africa Development (NEPAD) Transport and Infrastructure Summit at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. The department has a double stand at the summit as well as a speaker slot in roads parallel session where the development of the North West roads infrastructure and proposed transport systems will be highlighted. Mahlakeng will also be hosting a table of departmental stakeholders at the summit gala dinner.

On 21 October 2010 the DPWRT will be in Bojanala where the MEC will address commuters, taxi operators and owners, taxi associations and bus companies at Brits taxi rank. 22 October will see the MEC in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District in a small farm school called Cecilia’s Home School which lies in between Ventersdorp and Coligny. Here the MEC will be handing over bicycles to learners who have to walk considerable distances to come to school.

On 27 October 2010 the department will be in the Dr Ruth Segomotso Mompati in Schweizer-Reinecke where MEC will once again address taxi operators and owners, taxi associations, long distance truck drivers and owners.

The North West Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport will conclude its Transport Month activities on 31 October 2010 back in Mafikeng at the Mmabatho Stadium parking lot where there will be an exhibition of different modes of transport used across the province as well as performances by Solly Moholo. Here the MEC will address the gathering consisting of taxi associations, bus companies and others who are responsible for transporting people in the province to conclude the DPWRT’s busy transport month schedule.

A more detailed programme with venues and times will be issued in the next few days.
