Department of Mineral Resources commemorates 16 Days of Activism of Against the abuse of Women and Children in mining communities

The Minister of Mineral Resources, Ms Susan Shabangu, accompanied by North West Premier, Ms Thandi Modise and industry stakeholders will on 11 December host a community meeting at Impala Mine, Phokeng in Rustenburg to commemorate the 16 Days of Activism Against the Abuse of Women and Children.

During the Women’s Month in August 2010, Minister Shabangu hosted women in mining: Ingxoxo where serious concerns were raised including serious allegations of sexual harassment in the mines and within mining communities. The department recognises that women face various challenges particularly in the mining sector as it is still largely male-dominated. Women empowerment is one of the strategic objectives of government especially in terms of skills and abilities to effectively participate in the economy in general and the mining sector in particular.

Therefore there is a need to ensure mainstreaming of women in the mining sector and this can be achieved through collaboration with all stakeholders. This, and other issues, will be raised during this particular meeting.

Members of the media invited to cover this event.
