Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs launches a Records Management Project in municipalities

In carrying out its constitutional monitoring and support role over municipalities Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs will launch Records Management Project in municipalities. The project has already been launched in Dr Ruth Mompati District Municipality last week.

Last year’s Annual Auditor Generals reports concluded that there is a serious challenge with regards to proper records and information management in municipalities which leads to some municipalities not submitting their financial statements for audit. Only 9 out of 24 municipalities in North West managed to submit their 2010-2011 financial statements for audit.

The aim of the project is to develop and entrench a culture of proper records management in municipalities, promote good governance to enhance service delivery through proper records and information management and establish processes, mechanisms and procedures for proper records management that will contribute towards the Clean Audit 2014 objective. Priority will be given to 15 municipalities which did not submit their previous year’s financial statement. Councilors and municipal officials will attend workshops on the matter as follows:
