Department to launch scholar patrol in Mangaung Metro

The Department of Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State together with provincial Department of Education will launch scholar patrol on Tuesday, 11 September at Kaizer Sebothelo stadium in Botshabelo at 10h00.

Scholar Patrol is an important part of Road Safety education and is essential to enhance the safety of scholars when they cross roads to schools. Not only does it regulate traffic, improve speed calming and facilitate safe crossing of the road but also instils in the minds of our young pedestrians an awareness of the importance of road safety.

The Department has been experiencing high number of learners crossing the streets in the morning when they go to school and in the afternoon when they return home in Mangaung Metro Municipality.

In most cases these learners cross the streets where they are not supposed to cross or without assistance of scholar patrols and these results in high road accidents involving learners hence we decided to launch scholar patrol programme in collaboration with Old Mutual, SAPS and Mangaung Metro Municipality. Fifteen schools from Mangaung will be given scholar patrol uniform donated by old mutual.
