The Department of Labour (DoL) is to host a two-day workshop on the development of guidelines on risk assessment for Iron and Steel Sector in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.
The workshop to be held at the Radisson Blu Hotel will start tomorrow (February 28) at 8h00. It is being held to discuss a draft document on the guidelines that would measure risk assessment for the sector. At the end of the workshop it is expected that a comprehensive document will be adopted.
The iron and steel sector together with sectors such as chemical; transport; agriculture and forestry; building and construction; plus foods, drink and tobacco industries – have been identified by the Department of Labour’s Inspection and Enforcement Services Unit as areas of focus to ensure compliance with safety and labour laws.
Speakers at the gathering will include DoL’s Director: Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Jacob Malatse; DoL Deputy Director: Inspection and Enforcement Services Mohlakola Monyaki; Assistant Director: Inspection and Enforcement Alfred Cakata and Director: Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Livingstone Matiwane.
Recent figures by DoL’s public entity, the Compensation Fund (CF) showed a dramatic rise in number of claims paid to service providers especially in high risk sectors. In the year 2008/9 the amount of claims paid to employees and service providers was R2 175 679 138, this increased in 2009/10 to R2 286 410 189, and in the 2010/11 the Fund paid 2, 708 203 689.
A total of 872 720 claims were paid out by Compensation Fund during the last financial year. Iron and Steel and related services accounted for about 190 000 in the period April 2010-March 2011. A total of more than R427 million of compensation claims was paid out to the sector.
