The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) to host UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation, in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre and the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Pretoria will host a morning seminar on Tuesday, 22 November 2011, to commemorate United Nations (UN) International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

The theme of the seminar will be on “The role of international solidarity towards the achievement of a Palestinian state as well as the international political context regarding Palestinian self-determination.”

Speakers at the seminar will include:

  • Dr. Sabri Saidam: Deputy Secretary General of Fatah’s Revolutionary Council
  • Mr Aziz Pahad: Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Africa
  • Prof. Steven Friedman: Director of the Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of Johannesburg

The United Nations International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is an annual event first declared by the United Nations in 1977 and is observed on 29 November, or on the closest working day to that date.
