Department to host traditional leadership summit

The North West Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs in partnership with the Department of Mineral Resources as well as the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform will host a provincial summit on traditional leadership from 29 to 30 March 2010 at the Mmabatho Palms Resort.

The summit under the theme: “Empowering Traditional Governance Structures for Sustainable Rural Development” is aimed at highlighting and addressing issues affecting the institution of traditional leadership in the province.

The summit will deal with the following objectives:

* Discuss various current pieces of legislation relating to minerals, land use and management
* Look at various options or models available in signing mining deals with investors as this affects land use within the rural setting
* Develop a route map document as a checklist in facilitating mining transactions and land use within the rural governance framework.

Participants at the summit will include traditional leaders, mayors, MECs and officials from local and provincial spheres of government.
