The Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, will launch a Domestic Waste Collection pilot project in Mafikeng local municipality on 3 September 2009.
The goal of the pilot project is to develop and refine a small and medium enterprise (SME) driven labour intensive implementation model for domestic waste collection for wider roll out to municipalities, significantly to reduce the backlog in domestic waste collection services on a sustainable basis in prioritised municipalities.
The project also intends to implement a community based approach to waste management and waste reduction that demonstrates different aspects of government’s policy and legislation on waste management. The pilot project will be implemented in partnership with Mafikeng local municipality.
The project is an Expanded Public Works Programme initiative designed towards job creation, poverty alleviation and skills development within communities. Based on the lessons learnt through the pilot, the department aims to establish a model for municipal waste management that eradicates backlogs in service delivery in the rest of the country.
