Department to embark on substance abuse awareness campaign

Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport will embark on substance abuse awareness campaign during the Month of September as part of its mandate to educate communities about ill effects of drugs and substance abuse. The aim of the Campaign is to discourage abuse of alcohol and drugs among young people and to educate them on the negative impact of drugs and substance abuse to human beings.

The need for this campaign is prompted by a high level of substance abuse by teenagers and youth in our communities. The Campaign will focus on creating awareness on the dangers of abusing alcohol and dagga which is commonly used by youth of identified towns where our campaign will take place.

Substance abuse problem manifests itself in many ways:

  • Drug dealers sell drugs to vulnerable groups e.g. Learners or minors
  • Youth succumb to peuer pressure to experiment on drugs and
  • HIV and AIDS is often transmitted through sharing of needles and drug abuse.
