Department of Defence Gender Seminar at the South Africa Army College

On Wednesday, 31 August 2011, at 12h00 the Department of Defence (DOD) will hold a strategic gender seminar at Paratus Hall, SA Army College. During the seminar, the Chief of the SANDF, General Solly Shoke will reflect on the achievements by the SANDF in the promotion of gender equality. The theme of the seminar is “Towards a United, Non-Racial and Non-Sexist Department of Defence (DOD)”.

The former Premier of the North West, Ms Thandi Modise will give a briefing on the origins of UN resolution 1325 and its significance in the military.

The Chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence (JSCD) will share with the audience the effective oversight mechanism to be institutionalised in order to ensure the advancement of the Gender Equity Agenda within the DOD.

Not many people are aware that the SANDF is regarded as the best on gender mainstreaming in the military milieu as a result one of the Defence Force policy stipulates that all women have right to serve anywhere they choose in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
