Department to create awareness on disaster risk management

The North West Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs in collaboration with Mafikeng Local Municipality will on Friday, 17 August 2012 host a Disaster Risk Management Awareness Campaign at the Driehoek Community Hall at 09h00 in Driehoek Village near Bethel (Ngaka Modiri Molema District).

The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness about disaster management in rural communities and to support human capacity development through information and training in critical areas.

The initiative was probed by several disaster cases identified in Driehoek which amongst others include floods and general fires and is aimed at rising consciousness about disaster risks by providing information on how to reduce vulnerability and exposure to hazards.

Targeted audience and role players will include Community Development Workers (CDWs), Ward councilor, Ward Committees, Red Cross, Youth for Christ, Botshelo Water, Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), South African Police Services (SAPS), Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and the community in general.
