Department of Basic Education to launch the UNESCO Education for All Global Monitoring Report (GMR) 2012

The Department of Basic Education will launch the African leg of the United Nations (UN) Global Monitoring Report (GMR) on Education, at the Soweto Theatre, in Soweto Johannesburg. The report which was set up in 2002 aims to amongst other things keep track of progress towards the Education For All (EFA) goals.

As part of the commitment of the UN to improving education in Africa, the Director-General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Irina Bokova has given top priority to the launch in Africa. The UN has appointed as Special Representative for this event Ms Amina Ibrahim who is Chair of the Advisory Board of the GMR and Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on the Post 2015 Planning and Development.

South Africa has been selected as one of the venues for the simultaneous Regional launch of the GMR because of the unique efforts made by the Government of South Africa on Education in general and on skills development for youth in particular.

The GMR aims to inform and influence national and international policymakers, planners, aid donors, UN organisations, civil society, as well as increasing public awareness of the importance of education. The main priorities addressed by the report include expanding and improving comprehensive early childhood care in education and also looks at an overall Improvement of every aspect of the South Africa’s education system while emphasising the production of excellence so that recognised and measurable learning outcomes become visible.

This will further allow the spotlight to be shown on areas where the system can be improved upon by adapting global strategies and programs that have been successful elsewhere.
