The Department of Arts and Culture will host a two-day (25 to 26 October 2012) Visual Arts Indaba-Towards a Visual Arts Framework at the Cedar Park Conference Centre, Woodmead, Johannesburg. The purpose of the Visual Arts Indaba is to report back to the sector on the findings of the research and create a platform for government and the sector and government to jointly review and finalise the recommendations of the Report.
The Indaba will ensure that the report is subjected to a wider scrutiny and thus the final product will receive support and ownership by all stakeholders. The department will also present its proposal for the establishment of the national visual arts task team (VATT) to stakeholders for endorsement. The visual arts sector will nominate persons to serve on the VATT that will assist the department and the Minister in policy framework formulation and the implementation of the indaba outcomes.
The Department of Arts and Culture commissioned an assessment of the Visual Arts Sector in South Africa. The research report provided the initial basis for the interaction with stakeholders towards formulating a policy and a strategic framework for growing the visual arts as a critical sub-sector of the creative industries. This process involved stakeholder interaction across all the visual arts disciplines around all the provinces.
The indaba will discuss topics such as Policy and Advocacy, Funding, Skills Development & Training, Promotion & Marketing as well as Institutions & Heritage. The recommendations to be presented are centred on these topics. Participants include artists, curators, arts, culture and heritage unions and organisations, galleries and auction houses, public and government art museums, non-governmental organisation and support organisations tertiary and education institutions and many others. Members of the media are invited to attend.
