The Department of Agriculture will host its annual youth conference for young people who are involved and interested in farming as a career. The objective of the conference is to provide an opportunity for young farmers to interact with the department about their challenges and successes in the farming sector. Young farmers will also share experiences amongst themselves and strategize as to how they can make a positive contribution to food security and the agricultural economy

The conference will culminate in the third annual young aspirant farmer of the year awards. The awards are aimed at recognising and rewarding young agribusiness entrepreneurs. They also serve as a support mechanism to the succession strategy which will ensure young people become farmers and succeed their parents.
Prizes will be awarded in the following categories; top producer for formal markets, top producer for informal markets, top specialised agricultural school, and top secondary school in agriculture and top primary school in agriculture.
