Day of Prayer for Road Safety and 2011 National Festive Season Media Launch

The Road Traffic Management Corporation and the Department of Transport will host the Day of Prayer for Road Safety and launch the 2011 National Festive Season Road Safety Campaign.

Due to the high incidence of fatalities and injuries on our roads during the past few months, the campaign will aim at curbing road accidents especially since the festive season has begun. The launch will also showcase the state of readiness of traffic safety disciplines in their plight to reduce the carnage on our roads.

The Minister of Transport, Mr Sibusiso Ndebele will provide the keynote address.

Highlights of the launch

  • Special Enforcement Operations,
  • Guard of Honor and Drill Inspection,
  • Inter-active Road Safety Expo,
  • Wreath-Laying Ceremony by provinces and
  • Procession of Enforcement/Emergency Vehicles.

Background: Recent Incidents

  • 10 passengers died in a accident 15km north of Polokwane and 45 were injured
  • 20 people were killed in an accident on the N1 in the Western Cape
  • 15 passengers were killed in Allandale, KwaZulu-Natal, in a taxi related incident in September
  • A man was killed and 4 seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the N4 highway, North West
  • 6 children were killed when a van hit into a bridge pillar in Meyerton and
  • 5 people, including a teenager were killed in a head-on collision outside Wolmaranstadt on a Sunday evening in North West.
