DAFF launches Easter anti-poaching campaign

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) will today, 5 April 2012, launch its Easter Anti-poaching Campaign with a series of activities in all coastal provinces.

Urging communities to work with DAFF and other law enforcement agencies to bring an end to the illegal exploitation of our marine resources, this campaign with the theme "Working Together to Protect Our Marine Resources", also seeks to illustrate the important role that communities play in the protection of these resources.

During this campaign, communities will be made aware of the negative impacts of poaching on the social and economic life of particularly coastal and fishing communities and through direct interaction with officials, they will learn about the different ways in which they can work with law enforcement agencies to bring an end to the illegal exploitation of our marine resources.

Some ways to get involved in this important campaign include the purchasing of fish products from dealers who are authorised to do so and to insist on a receipt when buying their fish products. Citizens are also encouraged to report any suspicious activities in their communities.

Working with the police and traffic authorities, DAFF officials will also do duty at various vehicle check points and distribute pamphlets at beaches, festivals and at shopping centres.
