During the Provincial Youth Camp held last year, the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in the Free State, Mr Dan Kgothule, emphasised the importance of contextualising and defining the importance of Youth Development in the new South Africa today.
The MEC also highlighted the importance of defining the vision of young people in this democratic dispensation against the vision and achievements of previous young generations. He further noted that this exercise cannot be fully achieved without identifying the opportunities young people are presented with and the challenges besetting young people today.
In a quest to enhance social cohesion and nation building, and in view of the above, the MEC has organised a Cultural Evening at the Sport Science Institute of South Africa in Cape Town on the 10th March 2012.
The programme will kick-off at 18h00. The event will be attended by all Free State Provincial Government bursary holders studying at Higher Education Institutions in Cape Town.
The event will serve as a platform to celebrate the Free State’s rich culture, its indigenous traditions, its people, its history and heritage. The event will also serve as reminder to students to plough back the knowledge and skills they have gained back to communities in the Free State. An opportunity will further be provided to bursary holders to raise their concerns and challenges with the MEC relating to their studies.
Through the provincial bursary programme, the Free State Provincial Government continues to generate requisite skills that are necessary to support the development priorities of the Free State Province. The Free State provincial government has awarded 1 500 learners with bursaries this year.
The bursary holders are studying at various institutions across the country in various fields that are critical to the socio-economic transformation of the province and the country. Since 2009, 578 students have completed their studies and most are employed in various departments in the province while others are in the private sector.
The Provincial Government remains committed to youth development and empowerment as evidenced in its policies and programmes.
