Crucial Correctional Services conference gets underway tomorrow

The Southern African Consultative Conference on Corrections gets underway tomorrow, 23 March 2011, at the Balalaika Hotel in Sandton. The three-day conference which takes place on 23 to 25 March is hosted by South Africa’s National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Tom Moyane. 

It brings together 14 heads of Prisons or Correctional Services, to engage and share knowledge and information on how to tackle various challenges facing the corrections system in the region. 

A number of topics will be discussed amongst them:

  • Curbing recidivism through risk management and development of core competencies
  • Managing overcrowding in correctional centres: Regional and international perspectives
  • Correctional centres and prison security: The cornerstone for rehabilitation and effective social reintegration

The media is invited to the opening session tomorrow morning at 09h00 which will include an opening address by Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. 

Members of the media are also invited to join in on the tour of the Leeuwkop Correctional Centre by conference delegates at 13h30 tomorrow.
