Correctional Services welcomes the First Lady Ms Thobeka Madiba – Zuma and elected representatives from the Gauteng Provincial Legislature

In support of 16 Days of Activism Campaign of No Violence Against Women and Children, and commemoration of World AIDS Day the Department of Correctional Services top management will on 1 December 2010, welcome the First Lady, Ms Thobeka Madiba – Zuma and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature representatives who are scheduled to visit the female offenders and their babies that are incarcerated at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre, previously known as Sun City.

The delegation from the Gauteng Provincial Legislature will be led by the Honourable Speaker, Ms Lindiwe Maseko and the Chairperson of Gender, Youth and People with Disabilities (GEYODI), Ms Lindiwe Lasindwa. Other Chairpersons of various standing committees within the Legislature and Members of Parliament will interact with offenders.

Johannesburg Correctional Services houses more than 800 women who are serving time for murder, rape, shoplifting, drugs trafficking, theft and assault with intent to cause grievously bodily harm. These women are mothers to approximately 50 babies whom some of them are with them behind bars.

The First Lady will advise and educate the offenders about cancer other chronic illnesses which is her area of specialisation. Ms Ntokozo Mbambo will give offenders a spiritual upliftment through performances.

Business sector have partnered with the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and will handout gifts to babies and mothers as early Christmas presents.
