Correctional Services to release last group of offenders as part of special remission of sentence

The current special remission of sentence process ends tomorrow (Friday, 6 July 2012).

On Friday (6 July), the Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Adv. Ngoako Ramatlhodi, accompanied by Correctional Services National Commissioner Mr. Tom S Moyane and other senior managers, will address one of the last group of offenders to be released as part of the special remission. The address to offenders will be followed by a media briefing.

On 27 April 2012, in keeping with the spirit of celebration of 18 years of freedom and in line with established international practice,  in terms of section 84 (2) J of the Constitution, President Zuma granted a special remission of sentence to specific categories of sentenced offenders, probationers and parolees. The remissions are happening for the first time under the current administration. Those offenders who pose a serious risk to society, particularly those declared to be dangerous criminals, have been excluded from remissions.
