Cooperatives funded by thedti to participate in the Cape Premier Yearling Sale

Seven cooperatives funded by the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) will get an opportunity to make their mark in the equine industry when they parade seven horses at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 26 to 27 January 2012.

The sale event will showcase approximately 350 of the finest thoroughbred yearlings which are individually inspected and approved on physical type, and screened by strength of their breeding before being put up for sale. Approximately 300 local and international guests and yearling buyers are expected to attend the event.

The seven cooperatives, which are from KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Western Cape received grants varying from about R150 000 to R300 000 from the Cooperatives Incentive Scheme of the dti in an effort to increase the participation and competitiveness of small enterprises in this high value niche sector of horse breading.

It will not be for the first time that cooperatives funded by the dti participate in the yearling sale event, which is hosted by the Cape Thoroughbred Sales. Last year four cooperatives also participated in the inaugural event and four horses were sold.
